Meet Dr. Suzanne Eckes:
Dr. Suzanne E. Eckes, J.D. is the Susan S. Engeleiter Professor of Education Law, Policy, and Practice at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Education, and a faculty affiliate at the University of Wisconsin Law School. She earned both her J.D. and her Ph.D. at UW-Madison, along with an Ed.M. from Harvard.
Before moving into academia, she was a public high school teacher and a practicing attorney, and she spent 18 years on the faculty at Indiana University. She has published more than 100 articles and book chapters, and co-authors several of the standard texts in the field, including Legal Rights of School Leaders, Teachers and Students, now in its 8th edition.
She served as President of the Education Law Association in 2017 and 2018, and in 2025 received the association's M.A. McGhehey Award for national impact in education law. She is a regular commentator on education law for national and regional outlets.

Why Attend?
A parent tells you at an IEP meeting that they are using a voucher to move their child to a private school in the fall, and asks what happens to the IEP. A colleague takes a job at a parochial school and assumes the protections they had in the district come with them.
Most special educators do not have a clean answer to either question, and the answers are not intuitive. A student who is parentally placed in a private school does not carry the same entitlements they had in the public system. An educator at a religious school may have far less protection under federal disability law than they expect.
In this session, Suzanne Eckes walks through what the law actually says on both sides of that line: what a district still owes a student who leaves, what a private school does and does not have to provide, and what the ministerial exception means for educators who work in religious schools. No advocacy, no predictions. Here is the law, here is what the courts have said, and here is what it means for your practice.
