Meet Dr. Connie Kasari:

Dr. Connie Kasari is a Distinguished Professor of Human Development and Psychiatry at UCLA, where she has been on faculty since 1990 and has served as primary advisor to more than 70 Ph.D. students. She is a founding member of the Center for Autism Research and Treatment at UCLA, and her research focuses on the development of novel, evidence-tested interventions implemented in community settings. Her work spans targeted treatments for early social communication in at-risk toddlers and preschoolers with autism, as well as peer relationships and social inclusion for school-aged children. She has led many multi-site federally funded projects investigating the efficacy of interventions for children with autism and other neurodevelopmental conditions, and serves on the science advisory board of the Autism Speaks Foundation. Dr. Kasari regularly presents to both academic and practitioner audiences locally, nationally, and internationally.

Why Attend?

For autistic students in inclusive general education settings, the hardest moments of the school day often aren't academic. Recess, hallway transitions, lunch, and other unstructured times can be isolating, confusing, and overwhelming - yet these are the moments that shape peer relationships, social confidence, and belonging. This webinar brings one of the country's leading autism researchers directly to your screen with practical, research-backed strategies for supporting autistic students during the parts of the day most IEP teams overlook.

Dr. Kasari will draw on decades of federally funded research and real-world school implementation to give you tools you can use immediately.

In this session, participants will learn:

  • Why unstructured time is high-stakes for autistic students in inclusive settings and what the research tells us about peer relationships during these moments
  • Practical strategies for recess and transitions that promote social participation without singling students out
  • How to set up inclusive environments so autistic students can engage meaningfully with neurotypical peers
  • Evidence-based approaches to peer support that special educators can embed into the school day without adding workload
  • What early elementary looks like as a critical window for intervention and how to make the most of it
  • How to coordinate with general education teachers to build consistency across the full school day

All registrants will have access to the recording and attendees will receive a certificate of attendance for professional development.
