You tried the intervention. It didn’t work. He’s spent a career explaining why.

Every special educator has lived it: weeks of small group time, a strategy from a training, real effort from a student who deserves results, and the progress monitoring line stays flat.

Dr. Matthew Burns’ research points to an uncomfortable, fixable reason. Most interventions don’t fail because teachers aren’t working hard enough. They fail because the support doesn’t match what the student actually needs. A fluency intervention for an accuracy problem. A comprehension strategy for a student who can’t yet lift the words off the page. The right tool, the wrong lock.

In this free session, Dr. Burns shows you how to diagnose the real problem behind a struggling reader or math student, choose the intervention the research says fits, and know within weeks whether it’s working.

NASET has supported special education professionals for over 22 years. If your work touches a struggling learner, whether you teach, provide related services, administrate, or parent, this hour is for you.

What to Expect:

Sixty minutes of practical research translation: why the intervention-to-student match matters more than the intervention itself, how to tell an acquisition problem from a fluency problem from a generalization problem, what the research says actually moves struggling readers and math students, and how to progress monitor so you know in weeks, not months, whether to stay the course or change it. The session closes with live audience Q&A, so bring the student you’re puzzling over.
