The Need: Every Classroom Has a Struggling Reader

Dyslexia is one of the most common learning disabilities in every school in America, and one of the most misunderstood. Educators are asked to spot it, support it, and explain it to families, usually without ever having been taught how.

This course closes that gap in three moves: the real science and definition of dyslexia (and the myths that follow it around), early identification through screening and risk factors, because the earlier the intervention the better the outcome, and treatment through structured literacy: reading instruction that is explicit, systematic, sequential, and cumulative, woven directly into strong core teaching.

The course's central conviction: a struggling reader is not a student who simply needs more reading. They need a different level of explicitness, support, practice, and feedback to access the same learning.

What Will You Learn in Dyslexia Identification and Intervention?

You will learn how to:

  • Understand what dyslexia is and is not: the history, the science, and the working definition
  • Recognize the early warning signs and risk factors, from preschool through the early grades
  • Use screening to find at-risk readers before they fail, and understand the path to identification
  • Understand why early intervention changes outcomes, and what the research says about waiting
  • Implement structured literacy: explicit, systematic, sequential, and cumulative reading instruction
  • Embed dyslexia-friendly practices into core classroom instruction so students don't wait for pull-out help
  • Plan from student need: adjusting explicitness, practice, and feedback instead of just adding 'more reading'
  • Communicate accurately with families about what dyslexia means and what helps

Everything in this course is practical, classroom tested, and designed to support real world special education teaching.
